Abigail: A Portrait of Perseverance and the "Never Quit Mentality"

As I stood with my daughter Abigail before the 2023 Murph Challenge, a profound sense of pride swelled within me. She has indeed followed in my footsteps, embodying the dedication and resilience that I have always strived to instill. An avid CrossFitter and Olympic Lifter, Abigail is on the cusp of graduating from the Texas A&M School of Nursing, marking yet another milestone in her journey of relentless pursuit.

Abigail's story is particularly striking when it comes to facing her dislikes head-on. Running was never her forte; she hated it. But rather than allowing this aversion to dictate her limits, she chose to challenge it by training for and completing a half marathon. In the aftermath, surrounded by peers who expressed their exhaustion and labeled the race as their toughest challenge, Abigail's response was nothing short of inspiring. With eyes alight with accomplishment and determination, she turned to me and said, “Dad, that was awesome, I’m going to sign up for a full marathon now!”

True to her word, Abigail not only signed up for the full marathon but also committed herself to the grueling preparation it demanded. Her dedication to training was unwavering, and when the day came, she completed her first marathon. But the story doesn't end there; it was made even more memorable by the fact that I, her father, had the honor of joining her on this remarkable journey. Together, we ran, side by side, each step a testament to our shared "Never Quit Mentality."

This experience was more than just a physical feat; it was a celebration of spirit, a testament to what can be achieved when one refuses to bow down to challenges. Abigail's approach to life—marked by an unyielding drive to push beyond comfort zones and a willingness to embrace the hard work required for success—is a vivid illustration of the "Never Quit Mentality" in action.

Her achievements are not merely personal victories; they serve as a beacon, illuminating the path for others who may doubt their capabilities or falter in the face of adversity. Abigail's journey underscores a powerful message: with the right mindset, any obstacle can be overcome, any goal can be reached.

Crossing the finish line of that marathon with my daughter, witnessing the culmination of her dedication, I couldn't help but feel that this was more than her triumph—it was a legacy in motion. It was the embodiment of a mentality that has been passed down, nurtured, and now flourishes within her.

So here's to Abigail, a shining example of the "Never Quit Mentality." May her story resonate with all who hear it, encouraging them to say, "If she can do it, so can I." And to those who embark on their own journeys of perseverance, remember that sometimes the most enduring victories are those we achieve together. Bam, that's the power of never giving up!

The "Never Quit Mentality" Embodied by Katelyn

In the narrative of courage and perseverance, my daughter Katelyn stands as a living testament to the "Never Quit Mentality." Weighing in at 120 lbs, she has faced adversities that would deter the stoutest of hearts. Despite being thrown off, kicked, slammed into trees, and trampled on, her resolve remains unshaken. Each time she mounts her 1300 lb horse and leaps over 3-foot obstacles, she exemplifies an extraordinary blend of bravery, strength, and mental fortitude.

As a Pararescueman (PJ), I've encountered my share of daunting tasks. Jumping out of an airplane with a 650 lb barrel attached to me during the dead of night is part of the job description—a job that demands nerves of steel. Yet, when I consider the risks and challenges Katelyn embraces in her equestrian pursuits, I can't help but feel a profound sense of awe. If riding her horse instills more trepidation in me than my own high-altitude jumps, it speaks volumes about the magnitude of her courage.

Katelyn's unwavering spirit raises a pivotal question: If she can confront her fears and pursue her passion with such tenacity, what is holding you back from chasing your dreams? Her example serves as a powerful catalyst, urging us all to reflect on our self-imposed limitations and to reevaluate the barriers we believe are insurmountable.

The essence of the "Never Quit Mentality" isn't about never facing fear or doubt; it's about choosing to rise above them, time and time again. It's about harnessing the inner strength to persevere despite setbacks and to continue pushing forward, even when the odds seem stacked against us.

Let Katelyn's story inspire you. Let it remind you that the capacity for greatness resides within each of us, waiting to be unleashed. Whether it's embarking on a fitness journey, pursuing a lifelong ambition, or simply taking the first step towards a personal goal, remember that the only true obstacle is the reluctance to begin.

Embrace the "Never Quit Mentality." Draw inspiration from Katelyn's courage and allow it to fuel your own aspirations. After all, if she can face her challenges head-on, there's no reason why you can't do the same. What is holding you back? It's time to find out—and to overcome it.

The Journey to Pararescue Elite Fitness Training: A Personal Narrative

Hoo-Yah! I appreciate you taking the time to delve into my story. It's a tale of passion, service, and an unwavering commitment to excellence that has culminated in the creation of Pararescue Elite Fitness Training.

Early Inspirations and Aspirations

My journey began with a youthful desire to help – people and animals alike. Initially drawn to veterinary science, my path took a dramatic turn when I encountered the world of a Pararescueman (PJ) on television. That glimpse into heroism and service ignited a flame within me. Despite not fully understanding what it entailed, I knew one thing for certain: I was destined to become a PJ.

Embracing the Call of Duty

As an athlete who cherished the outdoors and harbored a deep care for others, my calling materialized into over two decades of service as a PJ. My career in the United States Air Force spanned 25 years, during which I served at every level from Rescue Squadrons to Special Tactics Squadrons, and from Group and MAJCOM Staff Levels to Training Squadrons. I even held the esteemed position of Pararescue Indoctrination Commandant. Throughout this period, I worked alongside some of the most elite special operators on the planet.

Fitness: The Differentiator Amongst the Elite

In the realm of high-stakes operations, I observed a fundamental truth: the fittest were often the most effective. Physical fitness was the cornerstone that separated competent operators from exceptional ones. Recognizing that intellectual prowess alone wasn't enough if one couldn't endure the rigors of air, land, or sea, I vowed never to be a liability to my team.

CrossFit: A Paradigm Shift

2006 marked a pivotal year when I discovered CrossFit. This methodology revolutionized my understanding of fitness, reshaping both my physical and mental approach. Despite having trained seriously since 1994, CrossFit opened my eyes to new dimensions of health and performance.

Spreading the Fitness Ethos

Driven by a newfound purpose, I began training my teammates at the 321st STS in England. My enthusiasm led to co-founding the 4th Military CrossFit Affiliate, CrossFit Ramstein, in Germany, followed by opening my own affiliate, CrossFit Lackland, in San Antonio, Texas. These endeavors weren't just about fitness; they were about empowering others to reach their highest potential.

Post-Military Service: Continuing the Legacy

Retiring from the USAF didn't mean stepping back from my mission. I continued to serve as a contractor in Afghanistan and later as a Special Warfare Wing Developer, mentoring candidates across various special operations roles. Since 2020, I've been the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for an F-16 Fighter Unit, further extending my expertise.

Volunteerism: Giving Back to the Community

Even outside of professional commitments, I dedicate myself to serving others as a volunteer Firefighter Paramedic. This role allows me to stay connected to the community and continue making a difference.

Credentials: A Foundation of Knowledge and Expertise

My qualifications are a testament to my dedication:

  • Military: Over 25 years in the USAF as a (R) Senior Master Sergeant Pararescueman.

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Sports and Health Science.

  • CrossFit Certifications: CF-L3, Certified CrossFit Trainer (CCFT), and numerous specialty certifications.

  • NSCA: Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator (TSAC-F).

  • Medical: National Registered EMT - Paramedic.

  • Therapy: Facia Stretch Therapy - FST L1.
